Las Vegas Red Rock Canyon is located just a few miles away from the Strip and makes a perfect destination for people looking to escape the bright lights and bustling life of the city for a few hours. If you are looking for free things to do in Las Vegas this should be at the top of your list.

This area is particularly fascinating as you will be treated to views that you would never normally expect to be associated with being so close to a huge city. Let’s take a look at just what can be found at the Las Vegas Red Rock Canyon.

The beautiful red rocks were created millions of years ago through the fossilization of sand dunes. Some of the cliffs stretch to over 3,000 feet tall. There are also beautiful sandstone rocks incorporated into the Las Vegas Red Rock Canyon which gives the area the beautiful look that it holds to this very day.

The area is serviced by a 13 mile scenic drive that runs in a loop from start to finish. During this drive you will be able to experience everything that the canyon has to offer. This includes numerous samples of wildlife from Rabbits to Coyotes to Golden Eagles to Mountain Lions. Make sure that you have your camera handy as you will want to take photos. Don’t forget to make sure you fill up on fuel beforehand!

Calico Hills at Las Vegas Red Rock Canyon

One of the best places to lay your eyes on is the Calico Hills which shows just how rich the history of the Native Americans is in the area. I also suggest whipping out your camera for beautiful photographs of Willow Springs.

Las Vegas Red Rock Canyon for Hiking and Rock Climbing

If you want to get out and get fit there are also plenty of hiking trails and rock climbing activities for you to take part in. On these trails you will be able to see things that you cannot see on the car tour. This includes some of the most beautiful waterfalls that you have ever laid your eyes upon.

While here you should take the time to explore the Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center which is open from 8am on most days. Here you can learn about the history of the area as well as about some of the fantastic animals that choose to use the beautiful valley as their habitat. This visitor center is split into four distinct areas and you can spend hours here learning about how this area came to be. There is also a gift shop incorporated which will allow you to grab some souvenirs for your friends and family.

Las Vegas Red Rock Canyon Scenic Route

The costs of traveling the loop are fairly cheap at $7.00 per car. If you are only looking to hike then entry is free providing you park before you get to the start of the loop. All in all this is a pretty fantastic day out and it certainly will not break the bank.

If you are planning a trip to Las Vegas then you need to put Red Rock Canyon on your list of places to visit.
