Tomorrow Best Buddies of Nevada will host the second annual Flash Mob for Friendship in Las Vegas Town Square. Best Buddies has been hosting annual all day spring events, “Funwalks” for years. Last year they decided to replace the Funwalk with the Flash Mob, and participants seemed to really enjoy the change. Along with the flash mob the festival will include a silent auction, booths, live music, and a scavenger hunt that takes the participants on a journey through Town Square.
What is a Flash Mob?
For those of you who don’t know, flash mobs are groups of seemingly unrelated people who gather at a public location for a brief period of time preform an unusual act in front of an unsuspecting crowd, such as acting out a scene, or most commonly, perform a pre-choreographed dance and then disperse. They became popular through videos that have gone viral on social media sites such as YouTube or Facebook.
Founding of Best Buddies
Best Buddies was founded in 1989, after founder Anthony Kennedy Shriver observed his mother’s work with the Special Olympics, and saw the value of the friendships formed between the participants and the volunteers. He decided to start his own program, and since then the group has taken off, and expanded to all 50 states.
Best Buddies is a group for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It is geared towards the empowerment and improvement of self-confidence for these individuals. Their hope is to overcome the differences and close the gap between those in special education programs and those in general classes. The program pairs an individual with disabilities with a non-disabled peer based on similar interests, hobbies and personality traits. The friendship that develops helps the individual gain socialization skills and become integrated into their community.
Fun Filled Day for the Best Buddies
The event will run from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, with the flash mob starting at 3:45. Event organizers are anticipating this to be the largest flash mob in Las Vegas. Teams from participating schools and community centers have a chance to perform their smaller flash mobs throughout the day, and upload their videos to YouTube. The video that receives the most thumbs up will receive the grand prize and trophy.
The weather forecast for Las Vegas is expected to be bright and sunny, so if you have nothing to do this Saturday come on out to Town Square and enjoy the festivities. It promises to be a fun-filled day, and you will be contributing to a great cause too!
